Our Story

Sheldon Mayer didn’t set out to start a law firm. He set out to combine two things he grew up watching his parents do: think brilliantly about hard problems and care deeply about the people facing them.

His path to law began in the study halls of Lakewood, New Jersey, and a community kollel in Sydney, Australia, where years of rigorous Talmudic analysis sharpened the kind of thinking that complex estate planning demands. That foundation led him to Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, where he considered a dual degree in law and social work. He graduated with the law degree, but the social work impulse never left. “In estate planning, there’s a lot of counseling,” he explains. “I’m not a therapist, but sometimes I tell people I’m a counselor at law, because we do the counseling part also.”

Growing up, Sheldon saw his father (a quiet, brainy man) work through the legal strategies to help a neighbor going through a crisis, while his mother provided the emotional support. “I wanted to combine those things,” Sheldon says. “To take legal analysis and apply it to a person who has a problem, a worry, someone who could be helped.”

What Makes
Us Different?

We Listen First, Plan Second

Listening and questions illustration

Most estate planning firms start with documents. We start with you. Before we draft anything, we take the time to understand your family, your concerns, your financial picture and your goals. We ask the questions other firms don’t: about remarriage risk, undocumented family loans, children on government programs, the family dynamics that surface when money is on the table.

“People think their situation is simple,” Sheldon explains. “But once you start getting under the hood, it’s rarely as straightforward as it seems. That’s not a bad thing; it just means there’s more we can protect.”
